Last Sunday, I attended a beekeeping class at Bee University in Staten Island! I got to learn all about bees and how they make honey. The class was 2 hours long, with one hour spent on the field with bees, and one hour spent tasting honey from around the world. It was a great, hands-on experience. It was a little scary to be so close to the bees but protective gear was provided so I felt like an astronaut. Our teacher said to not make any loud noises or sudden movements because that might frighten the bees.
Fun Facts:
only 20% of bees fly around — most of the bees stay inside the hive to help at home!
in the winter time, the bees kill the boys because they don’t want to feed them
bees can remember things for up to 2 weeks, they see really well, and can recognize people’s faces
After going to the class, up the street, there was an all-you-can-eat Sri Lankan restaurant which is definitely worth checking out. The inside of the restaurant looked like a museum! Taking the Staten Island ferry was also a lot of fun! And close to the Staten Island ferry terminal in Manhattan is Trinity Church and they were playing live organ music!
